Stable Isotope Analysis Supports Omnivory in Bank Voles in Apple Orchards

چکیده
With only periodic and incomplete studies of its diet over time, all with differing methods conclusions, the degree omnivory in bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) is not fully clear. We assessed trophic niche species using isotopic (?15N ?13C) compositions from hair samples analysed how C. glareolus shares space herbivores, granivores insectivores living syntopically. According to numbers trapped, was fourth most numerous apple orchards that we investigated, accounting for 14.4% trapped small mammals a relative abundance 1.12 individuals per 100 trap nights. The average values both ?15N ?13C differed other groups, neighbouring habitats (6.55–6.95‰) being closest insectivores. Intraspecific differences (depending on age, gender reproductive status) were expressed, while correlations between body mass, condition index consistent. In comparison basal resources, signatures invertebrates seeds. same different habitats. This may be an indication ecological plasticity within species, allowing inclusion/success multi-species mammal communities.

Bait Stations for Controlling Voles in Apple Orchards
Bait stations made with polyvinylchloride (PVC) pipe were compared with hand-broadcast applications of rodenticides for achieving long-term control of pine and meadow vole populations (Microtus pinetorum and M. pennsylvanicus, respectively) in two apple orchards in the mid-Hudson Valley of New York. The stations were constructed of three pieces of 1.5-in diameter PVC tubing joined together in t...
متن کاملAccumulation of lead and organochlorine residues in captive American kestrels fed pine voles from apple orchards.
Pine voles (Microtus pinetorum) were collected from pesticide-treated orchards in New York (USA) and fed to three captive American kestrels (Falco sparverius) for 60 days to evaluate potential hazards from soil-borne persistent insecticides. Three control kestrels were fed uncontaminated laboratory mice (Mus musculus). The pine voles contained an average of 38 ppm lead, 48 ppm DDE and 1.2 ppm d...

The application of stable isotope analysis (SIA) has become a standard scientific approach in Agricultural and Ecological researches and, more in general, in several disciplines such as biology, botany, zoology, organic chemistry, climatology, and nutrition. The main objectives of this paper are (1) to provide a simple definition of stable isotopes and (2) to illustrate analytical measurement m...
متن کاملRobotic Surveying of Apple Orchards
We present a novel system for surveying apple orchards by counting apples and estimating apple diameters. Existing surveying systems resort to active sensors, or high-resolution close-up images under controlled lighting conditions. The main novelty of our system is the use of a traditional low resolution stereo-system mounted on a small aerial vehicle. Vision processing in this set up is challe...
